800 YEARS OF STEWARDSHIP
The Antifragile Family® decodes the mechanics of legacy continuity. Founded by Octavian Graf Pilati, the institution translates ten centuries of history into discrete, precise strategies for the modern era.
The Provenance
An 800-year-old family business and ten centuries of lineage form the bedrock of Octavian’s perspective. Born into the Lower Austrian line of the Princes of Khevenhüller-Metsch – continuing today as the Counts Pilati von Thassul zu Daxberg – he was raised within the stewardship of historic agricultural and forestry estates.
Following an education in England and the rigor of mechanical engineering, he now applies this symbiosis of ancestral depth and systemic logic to the complexities of multi-generational responsibility.

THE ANCHOR
Multi-generational responsibility finds its physical manifestation in Burg Hardegg, a medieval fortress in Lower Austria held and protected by the family. Originally acquired as a ruin within a larger estate portfolio, the site held deep personal significance for Johann Carl Khevenhüller-Metsch. In a bold act of legacy building, he chose to reconstruct the fortress in the spirit of Historicism.
This monumental task laid the conceptual foundation for The Antifragile Family®, embodying the belief that a legacy is not a static relic to be preserved, but a dynamic system that must be actively reimagined to avoid becoming a burden of the past.
THE CRUCIBLE
Decades later, the resilience of this inherited philosophy was put to the ultimate modern test. In 2014 a major crisis hit the family’s enterprises. Octavian was pulled from his studies directly into the heart of crisis management. This period became a defining chapter, providing lasting insights into adaptability and the realities of sustaining a name through turmoil.
It was here that the ancestral ethos was refined into a proven methodology: the realization that family systems must not only endure challenges but grow stronger because of them. A journey that today serves as a case study for executive education at Harvard Business School.
THE Vanguard
Armed with these hard-won insights, Octavian now translates this principle of active evolution into the modern era. Beyond the fortress walls, he oversees the family’s global portfolio, managing a real estate footprint and strategic venture capital investments with a primary focus on Deep Tech. In doing so, he ensures that the family’s legacy remains as resilient and forward-looking as the architecture that defines its history.
